Deputies stopped Montgomery, who was traveling in his RV, just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday to serve him a protective order when he allegedly started shooting at them, WRDW reported.
Deputies fired back, likely killing Montgomery, according to the report. He was later found dead in the RV, along with a slew of bombs and explosives.

The outlet reported Montgomery was allegedly involved in an illegal steroid operation.
Montgomery was charged in December 2022 with felony aggravated assault, according to Columbia County court records. Records indicate he was later exonerated.
However, WRDW reported Montgomery received an order from a judge on Thursday requiring him to turn over guns he altered.
It is unclear if the gun used in the shooting, a 9mm AR pistol converted to a fully automatic weapon, was one of the guns ordered to be turned over to the county.
