Ukrainian troops moved cautiously to retake territory north of the country's capital on Saturday, using cables to pull the bodies of civilians off the streets in one town out of fear that Russian forces might have booby-trapped them before leaving.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned in his nightly video address hours earlier that departing Russian troops were creating a "catastrophic" situation for civilians by leaving mines around homes, abandoned equipment and "even the bodies of those killed." His claims could not be independently verified.

The United States will work with allies to transfer Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine to bolster its defenses in the Donbas region, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing a U.S. official.

The transfers, requested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, would begin soon, the unnamed official said, according to the Times. The official declined to say how many tanks would be sent or from which countries they would come, the paper said.

The tanks would allow Ukraine to conduct long-range artillery strikes on Russian targets in the Donbas region of southeastern Ukraine bordering Russia, the official said, according to the Times.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Saturday that Russian troops are creating a "catastrophic" situation for civilians by leaving mines around homes, abandoned equipment and the bodies of those killed.

"It’s still not possible to return to normal life, as it used to be, even at the territories that we are taking back after the fighting," the president told his nation in a nightly video message. 

"We need to wait until our land is demined, wait till we are able to assure you that there won’t be new shelling," he said.

The Vatican previously made no mention of travel plans, but the pope on Saturday said that a visit was "on the table" and provided no further details.

The pope previously described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war as “unjustified aggression” but has avoided not to mention culpability in the war, according to the Guardian.

Dmitry Rogozin, head of space agency Roscosmos, announced Saturday that Russia has terminated cooperation with western countries over the ISS until sanctions end.

Rogozin claimed the sanctions aim to “kill Russian economy and plunge our people into despair and hunger, to get our country on its knees.”

“That’s why I believe that the restoration of normal relations between the partners at the International Space Station (ISS) and other projects is possible only with full and unconditional removal of illegal sanctions,” he tweeted.

The British Ministry of Defense said Saturday that Russian forces have withdrawn from key areas around Kyiv as Ukrainian forces retake some surrounding villages.

Russian forces abandoned the Hostomel airport, which remained a primary target since the first day of the invasion.

Ukrainian forces secured a crucial route in Kharkiv after heavy fighting, adding to another victory after the liberation of Trostyanets, near Sumy.

Translation: "This week, the Ukrainian National Guard and Defense Forces actively expelled the occupiers from the settlements of Kyiv region."

Red Cross spokesperson Ewan Watson described a dire reality as workers look to aid injured Ukrainians amid the country's war with Russia.

“We are running out of adjectives to describe the horrors that residents in Mariupol have suffered,” Watson said.

The Russian War has killed thousands and has forced more than 4 million refugees out of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during his nightly address that Russian forces are withdrawing.

"The occupiers are withdrawing forces in the north of our country," Zelenskyy said. "The withdrawal is slow but noticeable."

"Somewhere they are expelled with battles. Somewhere they leave positions on their own. After them a complete disaster and many dangers are left," the Ukrainian president added.

Translation: "In the Chernihiv region, in recent days, the enemy has suffered significant losses - more than 50 units of armored vehicles and [other] vehicles."

"A number of settlements were liberated, in particular, the village of Shestovytsia near Chernihiv. Let's win together!"

Ukraine state energy company Energoatom said Friday that Russian forces have handed back control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. 

Energoatom claimed the pullout happened after soldiers received "significant doses" of radiation from digging trenches in the forest in the exclusion zone around the closed plant.

The U.S. will provide an additional $300 million in military equipment to Ukraine as their war with Russia continues, the Defense Department announced.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby shared the additional aid in a statement Friday evening, saying the new package “represents the beginning of a contracting process to provide new capabilities” to Ukraine.

The U.S. has given more than $1.6 billion to Ukraine since the start of the war.

At least 53 historical sites have been damaged in Ukraine, according to a report.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has called for additional protective measures to be implemented to protect these invaluable sites, amid the ongoing Russian War. 

In total, UNESCO's report listed 29 religious sites, 16 historical buildings, four museums and four monuments that have been totally or partially damaged.

"We are very concerned about both the situation at the humanitarian and (cultural) heritage levels. Humanity's heritage is in danger (in Ukraine)," UNESCO's assistant director-general for culture Ernesto Ottone said during a news conference, Reuters reported.
